Public Safety
Due to retirements and pension uncertainties, the San Diego Police Department has lost over 250 officers this year, leaving the size of the force the same as it was in the 1980s, when San Diego's population was hundreds of thousands less than it is today. We are a city of over one million people, and even with such a dire need for police officers, we are not able to fill our police academies.
District Two, which includes the beach communities (PB, OB, and MB) and downtown, has some of the worst crime in the region. If we are not able to provide proper compensation for an experienced police force, then it will be our noise complaints and the safety of our neighborhoods that will suffer. Even in these difficult economic times for the city, we must ensure that the men and women who protect our streets are able to make a living wearing the badge.
